My name is Cleon Athill. I am a child-victim
of domestic violence. I
grew up in a family where my mother was physically and emotionally abused by my
father for decades.
I saw first hand what he did to her and how that
experience negatively affected her. And I know first hand
- what it has done to my brothers, sisters and myself.
Not only did my father abuse my mom, but he also abused us -
physically and emotionally. And it has left its mostly invisible, but deep marks
of pain, hurt and agony.
Nine Myths About Domestic Violence
Myth 1: Victims of domestic violence
like to be beaten.
Fact: Victims of domestic violence have historically been characterized
as masochistic women who enjoy being beaten...
Myth 2: Victims of domestic violence
have psychological disorders.
Fact: This characterization of battered women as mentally ill stems from
the assumption that victims of domestic violence.....
Myth 3: Low self-esteem causes victims
to get involved in abusive relationships.
Fact: Traditional theories presumed that individuals with adequate
self-esteem would not "allow" themselves to be abused by intimate
partners or spouses...
Myth 4: Victims of domestic violence
never leave their abusers, or if they do, they just get involved in
other abusive relationships.
Fact: Most victims of domestic violence leave their abusers, often
Read on to find out how you can
get all nine myths - extensively discussed and explained along with the
information you need to respond to these myths.
Problems of domestic violence seem to be pervasive in every
community. And the sad thing is that most of it is hidden... Generally, other
people don't see our pain and hurt.
I have always wanted to spotlight family abuse and domestic
violence. This has been a personal mission. Over the last thirty years, I have
researched and studied this devastating problem which affects
one in every four women in the world.
I have not only provided direct services to victims but I have
become an outspoken advocate for victims and an outspoken critic of a world
which largely minimizes and perpetuates the global problem of family abuse and
Move From Hurt
to Hope As You Heal from the
Pain of Domestic Violence!
As a counseling and social psychologist, I have first had to
work on my own healing. As I have walked on my personal journey, I have learned how to empower myself.
I have developed self-confidence and a strong belief in my own abilities. And, I have worked
in the trenches with adult and child victims of family violence, sexual abuse
and child abuse. I have seen how women and their children can move from
desperate dependency to fulfilling self-determination, from hurting to healing,
and from quiet suffering to quiet satisfaction.
I have experienced for myself - what works and what doesn't. I
have heard from my clients how they moved from hurt to hope as they healed. I
have listened as they told how they took charge of their lives... how they made
their biggest decision! What was their decision? They decided to walk
away; To move forward - To move on - And, then they decided not only to walk
away... but to stay away.
As part of my desire to touch and help victims from across
cultures and around the world, I wanted to find a way to help others who have
suffered like my mom. I wanted to find a way to give others hope. And to go
beyond home to give them clear information on how they too can take charge...
just like my mom eventually did.
So I wrote a book which thoroughly examines
Domestic Violence. This book (now in eBook form) presents the key
information, techniques and strategies that I have used not only to heal myself
but to help and empower others. It presents some of the things my mom had to
learn the hard way. It presents info about the challenges we face
as we move from desperation to determination to making a firm no-going back
It also presents strategies that have come from
the personal experiences of some of my friends, professional colleagues. clients
and others with whom I have worked over the last twelve years. It presents
strategies on how battered women can move forward with their lives... how they
can protect children... and how they can do so safely.
